Coffee Break French
A course of 80 lessons of about 20 minutes each. Unfortunately, the teacher is not a native French speaker although the lessons are well presented. You can access the 80 podcasts for free while the lesson support materials must be purchased. Good for beginners.
Learn French by Podcast
This series of lessons continues to grow; currently there are over 140 lessons. The lessons are normally between 10 minutes and 20 minutes in length and again, all the podcasts are free while the lesson support materials attract a cost. There are about half a dozen free lesson plans so you can sample the quality of the support materials. Recently lessons have been added that focus on the financial crisis in Greece, the trapped miners in Chile and the expulsions of the Roma. The support materials (in PDF format) are well presented. Good for those wanting to improve their French as the majority of the lessons are at the intermediate stage.
One Thing in a French Day
This is a delight. A French woman in France gives you a brief insight into her life each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Both her podcasts and the transcripts are free from her website. Entirely in French but spoken without haste.
Other Resources
This is a rather eclectic list. While some are huge sprawling sites others contain only one item.
Learn French at the BBC
While this is a good resource there is almost too much information and it is very easy to get side tracked. There are both structured courses and stand alone materials.
Verb 2 Verbe
The antithesis of the BBC site, this site does one thing only - it conjugates verbs. Type in a French or English verb to view the full conjugation and its translation.
Tex's French Grammar
Tex's French Grammar (la grammaire de l'absurde), is a grammar reference that combines explanations with surreal dialogues and cartoon images.
Google Translate
Approach with care...you almost need to know French to use this successfully. Useful for listening to difficult words like fauteuil, d'accueillir etc.
5000 French Idioms
An out of print copyright free book that can be downloaded in text, PDF or Kindle format. I'm sure many of these sayings have fallen from grace but interesting nonetheless.
